Search Tutorial
As of May 5, 2004, the search screen is changing. As soon as it is complete, we will update these instructions. Basically, we are adding blanks for search words to make it more intuitive. The first blank will find notices for "Any" of the words you enter. If you enter "map bid" it will return a notices that has only the word "map" in it, only the word "bid" in it. If a notice haws both words, that will be returned too. The second blank will be for all words. Again if you enter "map bid" it will only return a notice that has both of those words in it. The third blank will be for exact phrase. If you enter "medical board" it will return a notice that has those two words in that order. A new fourth blank is to exclude notices from your search that contain a word(s) you specify. If you enter "map" here, a notice that has the word map in it will not be returned. (Only works when something is specified in the first two blanks. For instance, if you are searching for something environmental but don't want notices that have Mercury automobiles in them, you would put in "Ford car automobile." That way if any notice has car or automobile in it, it will not be found, yet notices that mention mercury would be returned to you. NOTE: --Use as few words as possible. --Use a part of a word instead of the whole word. --set a date range for the search. If dates are left blank, it will search several years of notices and take a long time. Explanations of Search Window: --COUNTY/PARISH: This drop-down box lets you choose the area of your state to search. Leave it blank to search the entire state. -- PUBLICATION: You can search either all newspapers or only one newspaper. --SEARCH WORDS: This is critical to the speed of the search. The fewer the words or parts of words, the faster the search. NEVER use common words like THE. SEARCH TYPE: -- Exact Match means it has to find EXACTLY what you type in the words box. Some call this "Phrase Search." -- All Words means it has to find all the words you type in the words box. But the notice it finds can have the words in any order, whether they are adjacent or not. -- Any Words means that any one of the words you type in the words box can appear in a notice. Yellow Ford will return a notice with only yellow in it, only Ford in it, but it also will return notices that have Ford Yellow somewhere the text. -- First Word Only is our version of a "Not" Search. "Environment automobile" will find words with environment in the notice, but it will not give you notices that also have "automobile" in them. You can have more than two words in this search, but it will eliminate notices with words 2, 3, 4, etc. DATE RANGE: Speed your search by specifing short date periods, perhaps a month.
